Posted: 12 Nov 2013 02:54 PM PST A study led by researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine shines a new light on molecular tools our cells use to govern regulated gene expression. The study will be published online in advance of print November 10 in the journal Nature Structural and Molecular Biology. |
Methane-Munching Microorganisms Meddle with Metals Posted: 12 Nov 2013 08:11 AM PST On the continental margins, where the seafloor drops hundreds of meters below the water’s surface, low temperatures and high pressure lock methane inside ice crystals. Called methane hydrates, these crystals are a potential energy source, but they are also a potential source of global warming if massive amounts of methane were released during an earthquake or by rising ocean temperatures. |
New Study Analyzes Sharp Rise in U.S. Drug Poisoning Deaths By County Posted: 12 Nov 2013 08:02 AM PST A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine gives new insight into the geographic variation in drug poisoning mortality, with both urban centers and rural areas showing a large increase in death rates. While previous studies have looked at drug poisoning related deaths in broad strokes, this is the first study to examine them on the county level across the entire U.S. |
Investigational cancer drugs unintentionally may result in tumor growth Posted: 12 Nov 2013 07:57 AM PST Researchers studying how cancer spreads into bone have made a surprising discovery that suggests several investigational anti-cancer therapies just entering the drug-development pipeline may not have the desired effect. |
