New Player in Electron Field Emitter Technology Makes for Better Imaging and Communications Posted: 05 Mar 2013 06:18 PM PST Scientists at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the University of Maryland, College Park, have built a practical, high-efficiency nanostructured electron source. Described in the journal Nanotechnology*, this new, patent-pending technology could lead to improved microwave communications and radar, and more notably to new and improved X-ray imaging systems for security and health-care applications.
Scientists make mouse model of human cancer, demonstrate cure Posted: 05 Mar 2013 09:37 AM PST UT Southwestern Medical Center scientists report the first successful blocking of tumor development in a genetic mouse model of an incurable human cancer.
Seniors Who Play Video Games Report Better Sense of Emotional Well-Being Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:42 AM PST New research from North Carolina State University finds that older adults who play video games report higher levels of emotional well-being.
New technique could improve optical devices Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:24 AM PST Understanding the source and orientation of light in light-emitting thin films — now possible with energy-momentum spectroscopy — could lead to better LEDs, solar cells, and other devices that use layered nanomaterials.
Selfish gene may undermine genome police Posted: 05 Mar 2013 08:15 AM PST Biologists have been observing the “selfish” genetic entity segregation distorter (SD) in fruit flies for decades. Its story is a thriller among molecules, in which the SD gene destroys maturing sperm that have a rival chromosome. A new study reveals a tactic that gives SD’s villainy an extra edge.
Herbal defluoridation of drinking water Posted: 05 Mar 2013 07:34 AM PST Researchers in India have developed a filter system based on a medicinal herb, which they say can quickly and easily remove "fluoride" from drinking water. The technology described in the March issue of the International Journal of Environmental Engineering uses parts of the plant Tridax procumbens as a biocarbon filter for the ion.
Health Benefits of Marriage May Not Extend to All Posted: 05 Mar 2013 07:18 AM PST Marriage may not always be as beneficial to health as experts have led us to believe, according to a new study.
