Surgery offers better survival rate in prostate cancer

Surgical treatment offers better survival rates than radiotherapy for men with clinically localised prostate cancer, according to one of the largest studies of its type. Researchers in Oxford, Stockholm, and the Netherlands compared data from more than 34,000 patients in Sweden over a 15-year period.

Screening for colorectal cancer based on age alone may contribute to both underuse and overuse of the tests among older patients, according to a study by investigators at the University of Michigan and the Veterans Affairs Center for Clinical Management Research.

VA, the nation’s largest integrated health system, Medicare and many private insurers use quality measures to encourage screening among 50 to 75-year-olds.

Caesarean babies are more likely to become overweight as adults

Babies born by caesarean section are more likely to be overweight or obese as adults, according to a new analysis.

The odds of being overweight or obese are 26 per cent higher for adults born by caesarean section than those born by vaginal delivery, the study found (see footnote).

The finding, reported in the journal PLOS ONE, is based on combined data from 15 studies with over 38,000 participants.

New acquaintances are often judged by their handshake. Research has now recognized the simple squeeze as an important diagnostic tool in assessing strength and quality of life among critical care patients.

In a study published in the journal, Support Care Cancer, Concordia professor Robert Kilgour and his colleagues at the McGill Nutrition and Performance Laboratory confirmed a link between handgrip strength and survival rates.

Experimental treatment developed at UCLA eradicates acute leukemia in mice

A diverse team of scientists from UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center has developed an experimental treatment that eradicates an acute type of leukemia in mice without any detectable toxic side effects. The drug works by blocking two important metabolic pathways that the leukemia cells need to grow and spread.
 
The study, led by Dr. Caius Radu, an associate professor of molecular and medical pharmacology at UCLA, and Dr. David Nathanson, an assistant professor of molecular and medical pharmacology, was published in the Journal of Experimental Medicine.

A new study suggests that vitamin D deficiency in older adults leads to compromised immune function. This results in increased risk of diseases including cardiovascular disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The study, accepted for publication in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism, was carried out by researchers in the University of Ulster in Northern Ireland, UK and Trinity College and St. James’s Hospital, both in Dublin, Ireland.
