| Quotations for Today | |
| "While the court deeply sympathizes with this unfortunate woman, it must protect the community against a recurrence of spreading the disease. Every opportunity should, however, be afforded her to establish, if she can, that she has been fully cured, and she may, after further examination, renew the application,..." - Justice Erlanger, ruling on 16 Jul 1909 against a writ of habeas corpus to be released from quarantine from Mary Mallon , "Typhoid Mary" (died 11 Nov 1938) (The use of radioactive elements as tracers is) "Probably the most useful tool for research since the discovery of the microscope." - Dr. Joseph G. Hamilton, American medical physicist who pioneered in the medical uses and health effects of radioactive isotopes (born 11 Nov 1907) (quoted in Time Magazine, 23 Jun 1941) "...depth psychology, for all its merits, may plunge too deep, and psychologists would do well to give full recognition to manifest motives before probing the unconscious." (1967) - Gordon Allport, psychologist (born 11 Nov 1897) | |

| Vesto Melvin Slipher (1875-1969) was an astronomer whose systematic observations (1912-25) of the extraordinary radial velocities of spiral galaxies provided the first evidence supporting the expanding-universe theory. Slipher spectroscopically measured the displacement of their spectral lines by the Doppler effect by which the wavelength of light from an object moving away from an observer will shifted toward the red end of the spectrum. What was his nationality? | |
| Paracelsus, born 11 Nov in a certain century, was a German-Swiss physician who condemned medical teaching that was not based on observation and experience. He introduced chemical remedies. He saw illness as having a specific external cause rather than being caused by an imbalance of the humours in the body (though he had an overall occultist perspective). He disputed that mental illness was caused by demons, and linked goitre with minerals in drinking water. In which century did he live most of his life? | |
| Deaths | |
| Mary Mallon (1870-1938) was a famous disease carrier in the early 20th century. Fifty-one original cases of the disease and three deaths were directly attributed to her (countless more were indirectly attributed), although she herself was immune to the infectious bacillus. In the area of which city did she spread this disease? | |

| On 11 Nov of a certain year, the discovery of cosmic rays was announced in Madison, Wisconsin by Robert A. Millikan who coined their name. In what decade was this discovery made? | |
| On 11 Nov In 1572, the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe first observed a "new star," also called B Cassiopeiae one of the few such objects recorded in the Milky Way Galaxy. From his precise measurements Brahe showed that it was not merely a nearby object, such as a comet, but was in fact at the great distance of the stars. Thus, he demonstrated that the stars were not unchangeable, and that real changes could indeed occur among them. What type of star had he observed? | |
