Estrogen treatment for recurrent urinary tract infections in post-menopausal women

Estrogen stimulates the production of the body's own antibiotic and strengthens the cells in the urinary tract, according to a new study from Karolinska Institutet. The results, which are published in the scientific journal Science Translational Medicine, show that estrogen supplements may help menopausal women to ward off recurrent urinary tract infections.

Super volcanic eruption possibly more devastating to human evolution than previously thought

About 40,000 years ago Europe suffered a major volcanic eruption in the Phlegrean Fields west of Naples. Deposits known as "Campanian Ignimbrite" are still present in the region and bear witness to the event. The ash that was flung into the upper atmosphere from the CI eruption was distributed far across Eastern Europe.

Beta amyloid - tau interaction causes synaptic damage, cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease

A new finding suggests that the progression of Alzheimer's disease worsened with the increased interaction of two proteins. The interaction between the phosphorylated tau and the amyloid-beta in its toxic form at the synapses has damaging effects which could lead to cognitive decline.
