TODAY IN SCIENCE HISTORY
 NEWSLETTER - JANUARY 25

Before you look at today's web page, see if you can answer some of these questions about the events that happened on this day. Some of the names are very familiar. Others will likely stump you. Tickle your curiosity with these questions, then check your answers on today's web page.
The End of CertaintyOn 25 Jan 1917, Ilya Prigogine was born, Russian-Belgian Nobel prize-winning physical chemist who sought a better understanding of time in the classical laws of physics. Today's Science Store pick is The End of Certainty, by Ilya Prigogine, an intellectually challenging book, in which he presents an overview of how he thinks quantum theory should be interpreted in order to give a direction to the "arrow of time". He backs up this up with compelling evidence supporting the idea that, contrary to the prevailing notions in the field of physics, there is time asymmetry both in quantum mechanics and in classical mechanics. Whereas most of the book is written in a natural style, some sections are highly mathematical. New $24.00, save 32%: Price $16.32.
Yesterday's pick: The Noble Gases. For picks from earlier newsletters, see the Today in Science Science Store home page.
Quotations for Today
"The future is uncertain... but this uncertainty is at the very heart of human creativity." - Ilya Prigogine (born 25 Jan 1917)

"Scientists often have a naive faith that if only they could discover enough facts about a problem, these facts would somehow arrange themselves in a compelling and true solution" - Theodosius Dobzhansky, Ukrainian-American geneticist and evolutionist (born 25 Jan 1900)

"If the omniscient author of nature knew that the study of his works tends to make men disbelieve his Being or Attributes, he would not have given them so many invitations to study and contemplate Nature." - Chemist in the quiz below (born 25 Jan 1627).

QUIZ
Births
William Shanks, born 25 Jan 1812, was an English mathematician who spent numerous years on a manual calculation. Shanks kept a boarding school at Houghton-le-Spring in a coal mining area near Durham. His calculation reached 707 places by 1873, a feat unchallenged until the use of electronic computers.
What was the subject of his calculation?
An Anglo-Irish chemist, born 25 Jan 1627, is noted for his pioneering experiments on the properties of gases and his espousal of a corpuscular view of matter that was a forerunner of the modern theory of chemical elements. One of the well-known gases laws is known by his name.
Can you name this scientist?
Deaths
Beno Gutenberg (1889-1960) was an American scientist who is noted for deriving information about the physical properties of the Earth's interior.
What method did he use for his discoveries?
Events
On 25 Jan of a certain year, Dr. Christian Barnard transplanted the first human heart without the removal of the old one.
In which decade did this transplant take place?
On 25 Jan 1798, Benjamin Thompson presented a paper to the Royal Society, Enquiry concerning the Source of Heat which is excited by Friction, in which he presented the idea that heat represents a form of motion, as opposed to the prevailing idea of being a fluid. He had come to this conclusion from his observations of the mechanical production of a certain armament.
What was the manufacturing operation he observed?
