TODAY IN SCIENCE HISTORY
 NEWSLETTER - DECEMBER 24

Before you look at today's web page, see if you can answer some of these questions about the events that happened on this day. Some of the names are very familiar. Others will likely stump you. Tickle your curiosity with these questions, then check your answers on today's web page.
The Physics Of ChristmasOn 24 Dec, thoughts turn to Christmas. Today's Science Store pick is The Physics of Christmas: From the Aerodynamics of Reindeer to the Thermodynamics of Turkey, by Roger Highfield. Going beyond physics, his anthropological observations include the origins of Santa Claus, his unhealthy obesity and apparent immortality. Was a psychoactive mushroom's red-and-white cap being the inspiration for Santa's robes? Was a parasitic infestation responsible for Rudolph's red nose? What are the advantages of cloned Christmas trees? Also included are the effect of alcohol on sleep patterns, the astronomical origins of the Bethlehem star, and the ins and outs of snow. Teachers will find much to spice up their lessons before Christmas, and anyone interested in science will have new perspectives to talk about. Price $16.99. Also available Used from $0.39 (as of time of writing).
Yesterday's pick: Cracking Codes: The Rosetta Stone and Decipherment. For picks from earlier newsletters, see the Today in Science Science Store home page.
Quotations for Today
"The animal frame, though destined to fulfill so many other ends, is as a machine more perfect than a steam engine - that is, is capable of more work with the same expenditure of fuel." - James Prescott Joule, English physicist (born 24 Dec 1818)

"When we try to pick out anything by itself, we find it hitched to everything else in the Universe." (1911) - John Muir, Scottish-American naturalist died (24 Dec 1914)

"Analysis takes back with one hand what it gives with the other. I recoil in fear and loathing from that deplorable evil: continuous functions with no derivatives." - Charles Hermite, French mathematician (born 24 Dec 1822)

QUIZ
Births
James Prescott Joule, English physicist, born 24 Dec 1818, established that the various forms of energy - mechanical, electrical, and heat - are basically the same and can be changed, one into another. Thus he formed the basis of the law of conservation of energy.
The law of conservation of energy is incorporated in the statement of which law of thermodynamics?
Deaths
John Muir (1838-1914) was a Scottish-American naturalist, farmer, explorer, writer and conservationist, who championed the establishment of national parks in California. Muir drew attention to the devastation of mountain meadows and forests by sheep and cattle, leading to his role as "Father of the National Park System "
Which two national parks in California did Muir champion?
Events
On 24 Dec of a certain year, the first U.S. house to be completely solar heated was occupied in Dover, Mass. The heating system, designed by Dr. Maria Telkes from the MIT Solar Laboratory, used black sheet metal collectors to capture solar energy, stored by the phase-change of sodium sulphate decahydrate in "heat bins".
In which decade was this solar house established?
On 24 Dec 1936, the first radioactive isotope medicine was administered, Berkeley, Cal. When Ernest Lawrence, inventor of the cyclotron, recognized the possibilities for uses of nuclear isotopes in medicine, he persuaded his brother John to join the Berkeley Laboratory. John Lawrence started Donner Laboratory circa 1936. Treating a 28-yr-old woman with chronic leukemia, he administered a radioactive isotope, artificially produced in a 37-in cyclotron. It was the first time that a radioactive isotope had been used in the treatment of a human disease.
An isotope of which element was used?
