Brain regions encoding shared experience and social reward Posted: 23 Dec 2012 07:17 PM PST Duke scientists studied the manner in which neurons in three frontal cortical areas of brain encoded the outcomes of social decisions as monkeys performed a reward-allocation task. During a task in which rhesus macaques had control over whether they or another monkey would receive a squirt of fruit juice, three distinct areas of the brain were found to be involved in weighing benefits to oneself against benefits to the other, according to new research by Duke University researchers. |
Atomic levers in molecular tug-of war accelerate chemical reactions Posted: 23 Dec 2012 06:12 PM PST Scientists have found that a molecule made with a polynorbornene backbone can act as a lever to open a ring embedded within the molecule 1000 times faster than a similar ring being tugged at on a polybutadiene scaffold. The results suggest that a simple change in the backbone may affect the how fast mechanically assisted reactions occur. |
