Persistent neurogenesis in the adult hippocampus aides long-term memory Posted: 04 Dec 2012 02:30 AM PST A new study shows that continued generation of new neurons in the brain is necessary for preserving long term memory. Adult neurogenesis, the formation of new neurons, is an ongoing phenomenon occurring under normal physiological conditions in two discrete regions in the adult brain; it is stimulated by novel environments, exercise, mating, and treatment with antidepressants. One of these adult neurogenic regions is part of the hippocampus formation, an area of the brain implicated in spatial and contextual fear learning and memory.
NASA Voyager 1 probe encounters new region in deep space Posted: 03 Dec 2012 12:36 PM PST NASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft has entered a new region at the far reaches of our solar system that scientists feel is the final area the spacecraft has to cross before reaching interstellar space.
How ‘transparent’ is graphene? Posted: 03 Dec 2012 11:10 AM PST The amazing electrical, optical and strength properties of graphene, a single-atom-thick layer of carbon, have been extensively researched over the last decade. Recently, the material has been studied as a coating that might confer electrical conductivity while maintaining other properties of the underlying material.
